Wafi-Golpu to conduct clean-up

National

WAFI-Golpu Joint Venture, in partnership with Lae City Authority, will conduct a beachfront clean-up as part of the World Environment Day activity on June 4-5.
Targeted beachfronts are Aigris, DCA along the Esplanade Drive, Vocopoint and Wagang village.
These beachfronts are frequented daily by city residents for outings, barbeque and swimming likewise white bag (buai bag) runners and passengers along the coastal Morobe and Northern.
The beauty of these beachfronts are tarnished with waste empty plastic bags and soft drink containers washed out to sea by Busu, Bumbu, Markham Rivers and Diddyman Creek and later washed ashore.
WGJV media and communications specialist Jeremy Mark said the World Environment Day (WED) in Lae will be celebrated in two parts.
The first part of the programme on June 4 will showcase songs, winning poems and drawings involving six selected primary schools – Amba, Bowali, Butibam, Huonville, St Martins and Milfordhaven Primary Schools at Lae International Hotel, all depicting this year’s theme: Air Pollution-beat plastic pollution.
The second part on June 5 will be the clean-up along the beachfronts from Aigris, DCA along Esplanade Drive, and Vocopoint to Wagang village.
It will involve volunteers from the Lae Urban wards 2 and 3 and Ahi wards 3,4,5,6 and 7, schools and nearby markets by students.
