THE multi-billion kina Wafi-Golpu mine will provide many opportunities for Morobeans, says Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge.
He said his own district was known for supplying fresh garden produce to Lae.
Wenge said new opportunities would arise for his people when the mine started production.
“On behalf of the people of Nawaeb, I thank the traditional landowners of Wafi for allowing mining on their land,” he said.
“Wafi will give us new opportunities. My electorate is full of garden food.”
Wenge said Morobe had a long history of starting from the colonial era when gold was mined in Wau and Bulolo.
He said there had been good and bad things associated with mining which must be taken into consideration.
“One thing I personally do not want is to see is fly-in, fly-out mine workers,” Wenge said.
“Why I do not want mine workers to fly-in, fly-out is because these are the people who will buy our products and spend their money in our province instead of spending it overseas.”
Wenge said the Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture should build residential areas for its expatriate and local workers in Morobe so they could live and work in the province.
“They should not go and bank their money overseas,” he said.
