THE Waghi Bridge in Jiwaka, which is the lifeline of the people of North Waghi in Jimi, faces the risk of being washed away.
The old bridge, built before independence, had over the years been hammered by floods and landslides.
Community leader Newman Wali said it would be a disaster for the people if the bridge was washed away.
It is constantly used by students, public servants, churches and businesses.
“The area just meters before the bridge has been washed away, also affecting coffee trees and gardens. The flood is continuing because of the heavy rain,” Wali said.
He called on the Government to engage engineers to strengthen the areas on both sides of the bridge.
Meanwhile, the River Kar bridge at Warakar in North Waghi is facing a similar problem.
The tribes in Komblo, Sekaka, Kulaka and Dei would also be greatly affected if the bridge is washed away.
