WAGHI Tumbe, eyeing a top-three finish in the Digicel Cup, continued their winning streak with a 22-10 victory against Mt Hagen Eagles at Jonah Ambane Oval in Minj on Sunday.
The round-seven victory was the Jiwaka government-sponsored side’s fourth-straight win. Tumbe have so far won five games and lost two.
Tumbe chairman Paul Tumun told The National yesterday that the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition’s (PNGNRLC) decision for Tumbe to host matches had boosted the franchise.
“Our first home game was a success,” he said.
“PNGNRLC has given us the nod to host a few more games in Minj.
“We want to finish in the top-three and I am confident that we can achieve that.
“We are fourth on the ladder, but we can still improve our position in the remaining rounds.”
Tumun said he was happy with turnout at Jonah Ambane Oval.
“The crowd really enjoyed the game,” he said.
“They had the opportunity to watch their team after a long time and it was great.
“There were also supporters who travelled in from Mt Hagen to cheer the Eagles on.
“Our governor (Dr William Togamp) also attended the match with Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika which made the occasion even better.”
Tumun said he was proud of his coaching staff, led by head coach and former SP Hunters forward Baundo Aba, for ensuring a solid start to their 2021 campaign.
The Jiwaka side will now host Gulf Isou in their round-eight clash on Sunday.
