A LONG-serving councillor and peace-maker for the people of Waghi Wel, in the Anglimp-South Waghi electorate in Jiwaka, has died.
Cr Pepa Kuri, from the Warake tribe, died on Dec 29.
Kuri, 60, was waiting to board a flight to Port Moresby to seek medical treatment when he collapsed.
His body was then taken to the Mt Hagen General Hospital morgue.
Kuri is survived by three wives and 10 children.
He played a major role in maintaining law and order and peace during his 40 years as a councillor.
A relative, Robert Tiki, said Kuri’s death was a big loss for the people of Anglimp-South Waghi.
He said under Kuri’s leadership people had managed to maintain law and order in their communities and the electorate.
Tiki said it would take time to fill the gap left by Kuri because “quality leadership will always make people change their behaviour and attitude”.
He said it needed tough and honest leaders like Kuri to bring communities and people forward.
Leaders like Kuri had played a major role in maintaining law and order in the province, he added.
