FORMER Kundiawa-Gembogl MP, the late Peter Waieng was farewelled like a hero as the Kerowagi Police Mobile Squad 12 fired a 21-gun salute before he was buried at his Bonguglingu village, along the Highlands Highway, on Saturday.

The salute came as Waieng’s coffin was being lowered into the grave.

Just before the burial, he was taken to the Mingende Catholic Mission where a requiem mass was conducted.

Community leader and former MP Peter Kuman thanked all those who contributed in cash and kind towards the funeral.

He thanked the police, especially provincial commander Supt Augustine Wampe, for committing time and effort to ensure the funeral proceedings was peaceful.

He called on the police team investigating his murder to speed up the process.

The programme was finalised after family members, relatives and his Narku tribesmen engaged in a heated debate to decide his resting place.

Wampe said Waieng was a leader who advocated peace and harmony among people and that was reflective of his character.

Waieng was murdered at Roku village outside Port Moresby on Aug 27.
