Waigani seen as ideal site for mixed development

WAIGANI is well placed for businesses looking to invest in Port Moresby, says Vision City Mega Mall general manager Anderson Ting.
He told The National that the location was ideal for mixed development which was a trend in Asia.
He was commenting on the K296 million Range View precinct project being built opposite the mall on Waigani Drive.
“I am aware of that development and their adaptation to our settings,” he said.
“This is actually a very common scenario around the world, particularly in Asia where mix development is widely considered. This type of development is attempting to recreate a city within a city.
“In NCD, Waigani Drive seems to gain its advantage and popularity despite lacking the sea view of downtown mainly because most government offices are centred here with a better and more logistical route within the city.”
He noted that the mall’s planned expansion is still ongoing and it is not rushed with other developments.
“Our operations have been doing well with a steady growth of at least 5 per cent every month despite the economic downturn. We are still receiving demand for new tenancy and on mixed development.
“Tenancy mix is equally important. Thus we have to carefully deliberate each application before allowing an entry. Some people are quoting that we are arrogant or proud but we are just trying our best to avoid over saturation that may indirectly or directly affect each tenant.”
He commended NCDC and the Government for driving foreign interest by hosting international events which were good for commerce in Port Moresby.
“However, the main concern is law and order which may have turned away some critical investors investing in the city on top of restricting the residents’ free movement. Let’s face it, everyone is worried about moving around after 5pm,” he said.
“The main sector we ought to look at is the tourism industry as it will bring in more shoppers and that definitely will assist my operation plus all other business, especially the local SME and hotels.”
