CORRECTIONAL Services Commissioner Michael Waipo maintains that he still holds the position despite media reports that he has been replaced.

Waipo said he was yet to be informed by Correctional Services  Minister Jim Simatab on any change affecting his position.

“It (dismissal) is unofficial at this point although we’ve had a press release from the minister’s office. We are yet to see evidence that officially I have been removed and replaced,” Waipo said.

“I have not received anything officially from the CS minister, neither have I got any documentation or instruments relating to that or affecting that arrangement with me.”

Simatab said in a statement on Monday a formal handover ceremony would be held next week, although he did not disclose the name of Waipo’s successor.

Waipo said he still was responsible for maintaining stability in the Correctional Services. He said it was important that citizens of the country were made aware of the situation in the State agency because it was a disciplined force and people must have confidence in it as its role affected public safety.

“It’s business as usual in the Correctional Services in Port Moresby and at institutions around the country,” he said.

He said the “situation” was under control.

“I appeal to commanding officers to be steadfast and maintain the prudent management of the institution so we do not experience any undesirable situation that may become a threat to public safety,” Waipo said.

He warned officers trying to disrupt the CS operations to return to duty or face disciplinary action.
