THE Hairo Wallabies bagged their first Baaz Cup title of the NCD Eastern Highlands Rugby League competition edging Oko Hills 2-0 in the final at Unagi Oval last Sunday.
The Wallabies walked away with the Baaz Cup trophy and K5000 while the runners-up got K2500 and a trophy.
In the B-Grade final fixture, C3 Young Guns and Kiki Rocks were scoreless at the end, which resulted in both teams, splitting the cash prize – K2250 each.
Competition president Benny Kene commended the two senior teams, who are both from the Bodiam 2 settlement in Six-Mile, Port Moresby for a successful end to the season.
Kene said Sunday’s final was their sixth and he commended the fans and the teams for making it a safe and enjoyable one.
He thanked local MP Lab Amaiu (Moresby North East) for backing the competition.
Amaiu pledged to continue his support of the competition during the pre-match formalities.
Among other commitments Amaiu promised to build a proper field for the competition at Nine-Mile.
Wallabies captain Mark Tony said winning their maiden title had been a long work in progress and he was pleased they had finally been able to achieve their goal.
He said beating a team from their own community was a positive for them all.
“It was brother versus brother and I’m just happy we all played hard and with good spirit. I just want to thank our fans for backing us all the way,” Tony said.
