AN 80-man squad is taking part in the colour competition for the Mt Hagen Wamp Nga Eagles trials for the Digicel Cup rugby league competition this year.
The selection competition kicked off last week and a full 25-man squad was expected to go into camp.
The squad has been divided into four teams – red, yellow, blue and green – and the final team will be selected this week.
The competition is sponsored by the Eagles team.
Wamp Nga Eagles is now aiming to play and revive the pride of rugby league in Western Highlands.
Leading the competition is interim Eagles board chairman, Ali Boniepe, Bob Pakundi and Joe Tep.
Pakundi said at the Gomis oval that Mt Hagen had two leagues – the Gomis and Hagen League.
He said players had been selected from both leagues because they wanted to have a balanced side representing the province.
“We did have some good guys in previous years carrying the flag of the province but the performance was not good enough,” Pakundi said.
“It is time we make a change and that is for the good of the province.”
He said the Wamp Nga Group of companies had taken up the sponsorship and they were now into selecting the final 25-man squad.
“We are prepared to face the challenge. Western Highlands will now have a solid team to carry the flag of the province and this is final,” he said.
Pakundi said this team would need the support of everyone.
He said the colour competition would end on Friday and the final squad would be announced soon.
Pakundi thanked the players for taking part and urged others to come in with ideas and support to bring the team into this year’s competition.
The Wamp Nga Eagles’ board submitted its application on February 16 to PNGNRL general manager Hubert Warupi to take it up with the management of Digicel Cup.
