Vice Minister for Sports and  Port Moresby North-East MP, Labi Amaiu presented a K10,000 cheque to a rugby union club in the electorate last Saturday.

The presentation followed a pledge he made to the Wanderers club during the launching of their new jerseys early this year.

The head coach of the Wanderers, Bojo Ben commended Amaiu for supporting the team.

Ben said most MPs support  rugby league clubs in local competition in the country but none has ever sponsored a union club.

“It is a first-of-its-kind gesture,” he said.

“Being a club in his electorate,  we wrote to his office and are thankful that he had responded positively.”

He said the money would be used to buy training gear, boots and t-shirts for the players as a way of motivating them.

“It’s really hard to find sponsors these days so I’m urging all MPs to sponsor local teams in their electorates,” Ben said.
