At present, people from the province are understood to board aircrafts from the airport or travel by road to Western Highlands to use the Kagamuga airport in Mt Hagen.
The Wapenamanda Airport is one out of the 22 airports in the country.
Manase said the upgrading and extension of the project will include the runway maintenance and sealing, building of a new terminal and car park, a VIP lounge, toilet facilities, proper seats for passengers to sit, extending the airport, build a power supply house, build a market and look at other developments inside and outside of the airport.
He said the programme would start this year and was expected to be completed by next year.
