Wapenamanda Airport reopens with flight package deal

THE re-opening of the Wapenamanda Airport came with the announcement of a three-day package in partnership with PNG Air for the 2021 Enga Cultural Show next month.
The airport was closed for an upgrade for over a year.
Governor Sir Peter Ipatas said the resumption of flights to Wapenamanda was a great deal for the province and the people.
“This is a necessary service for business, access to important services and for people to be able to easily move around the country, especially to the nation’s capital.
“It’s a big boost for the province’s growing tourism industry and comes just in time for the Enga Cultural Show, which is happening in three weeks.”
The Enga Cultural Show will take place on the Aug 6-7 with an exciting new day tour included on Aug 8.
PNG Air had also adjusted its flight timetable for the show weekend, with flights to Wapenamanda on Aug 6-8, making it more attractive for people to come for the weekend.
Show chairwoman Margaret Potane said more people were expected to attend the show given the PNG Air package and the new flight times.
“This year, the show will be fully packed with more than 50 cultural groups from all over the province, including singsing, traditional rituals, skills and crafts,” she said.
“Enga-made products, floral displays and food stalls will also be back as usual.
“We will also be running PNG’s first ever food tourism tour package, on Aug 8.”
In recent years, the provincial government has made a strong push to open up the province to tourism, getting behind the development of numerous small scale tourism service providers in the districts.
The province will also be hosting the country’s biggest annual industry gathering, Lukim PNG Nau Tourism Expo in September.
