Ward councillors encouraged to work alongside government

INTER-Government Relations Minister Pila Niningi wants ward councillors in Gulf to remain committed to bringing changes to the province.
Speaking at a local level government ward members’ leadership induction workshop last Saturday, Niningi said the government recognised the importance of the work of ward councillors’ and that many changes were expected soon.
“My job is to look for funding to assist the good work you are doing at ward levels,” he said.
“We will not come down to your level and do the work for you; you have to perform your duties.
“I understand the K400 per month allowance is challenging but I can assure you that you will be paid and we expect you to stay in your wards and do your work.
“You are doing a good job so stay in your wards and do not take trips to Port Moresby.”
Niningi said the Government recognised the crucial role that ward councillors played and was proposing changes to the laws.
“We will be submitting to the National Executive Council a submission on the changes for the wards and expect your local members of parliament to support it when we take the bill into Parliament.
“I’m aware of the situation and the difficulties you face.
“We appreciate your efforts under such difficult circumstances and acknowledge your work.
“Thank you for welcoming me to this village and I will make sure I return.”
Niningi called on the people of Gulf to make use of the potential they have in culture and tourism which could generate revenue for the province.
“Our culture and traditions will bring tourists to our provinces and communities so let’s preserve it because there is big potential in this industry,” Niningi said.
