Ward councillors paid allowances in June: Abel
WARD councillors throughout the country have all been paid their allowances as of June this year, Finance Minister Charles Abel says.
Abel said this in response to a question without notice from the Member for Markham Koni Iguan, who wanted to know if all ward councillors had been paid their allowances, as some in his electorate claimed they have not been paid for the past five years.
Iguan asked Abel to give an assurance that their allowances would be paid as most of them had lost their seats after the recent local level government elections.
Abel said all funding for the councillors’ allowances were dispatched to the department of Provincial and Local Level Government Affairs and according to the briefs, he understood that the funds had been paid out in June.
He said all warrants, appropriations and monies had been given to the Inter-Government Relations Department for the councillors’ allowances.
Iguan said it was one of the issues that was consistently brought up in his electorate.
He asked Abel to furnish a detailed report listing councillors who had been paid and those who had not in order for the matter to be addressed.
Abel maintained that the only month outstanding for allowances to be paid was July.
