THE accident and emergency department of the Eastern Highlands provincial hospital in Goroka is currently undergoing a major face-lift as part of plans to address the rising public concern on the degraded state of the hospital over the years.

Acting chief executive officer Joshua Soso said the authority would not resort to rhetoric about its plans but will “walk the talk” to improve health care services of the provincial hospital.

He said the accident and emergency department was one of the first contact points that served and admitted patients into the hospital and it should be a welcoming and conducive environment for both patients and staff to work in.

“Similar developments will follow suit in other departments and wards of the provincial hospital,” Soso said.

Officer in charge of the department, Dr Desmond Omena said they received over 100 patients every day ranging from motor vehicle accidents to trauma victims of tribal fights and other violence, typhoid, malaria and pneumonia.

“Most of our cases are referrals from the district health centres,” Omena said.

Carpenter Inax Aura, who is leading the renovation work, revealed that the face-lift included, repainting, retiling and rearranging of beds and other furniture in the main accident and emergency room.
