Warning issued as NHC stops evictions
Minister for Housing and Urbanisation John Kaupa has warned the public to be wary of con artists who are illegally evicting people from National Housing Corporation Houses throughout the country.
Kaupa said that the NHC had already stopped all evictions in the country
He said people should be wary of con artists who were illegally evicting tenants and illegally selling off NHC properties.
“We have already caught a few in the act and have arrested them,” Kaupa said.
“However, recently, we have received reports of an illegal eviction in Lae done by a former NHC officer.
“We have already notified police in Lae to track down the person and have him arrested.”
Kaupa also called on police officers to verify with NHC if they were approached to do any evictions.
“Police must check back with us to confirm if the eviction is legal or not,” he said.
“We have also already submitted a plan to NEC to approve.
“Once it’s done, we will carry out the valuation, validation and verification of NHC properties in the country.”
“In the meantime, we have stopped all evictions, so I call on the police to always verify with NHC before assisting people in evicting families on NHC properties.”
