Warning issued on threats of malware attacks

COMPANIES and government organisations should protect themselves from emerging forms of malware attacks, a cyber security expert says.
Logical Operations director Desmond Devendran said ransomware posed a threat to any company or government organisations data.
Ransomware is an emerging form of malware that locks the user out of their files or device, then demands an anonymous online payment to restore access.
Logical Operations, a software developer and a technological company, is partnering with Datec Learning Centre to provide corporate clients cyber security training.
Devendran said ransomware was a threat to PNG companies.
“Imagine in the government organisations that is infected with one of those malware that can disrupt government services, and no doubt it can cause a major catastrophe to the country,” he said.
He said a continuous awareness and training on cyber security was the way forward by being proactive.
“So that is the preparedness that we are trying to create right now,” Devendran said.
“In terms of the skills set, I am bringing in a series of tools and know-hows on how to get those ransomware to be detected.
“I have been in cyber security for 20 years, and I can tell you this, that ransomware is a very unique case scenario where once you are infected, there is a very slim chance of you being able to recover it.”
Some of the companies that attended the training included Investment Promotion Authority, Ombudsman Commission and PNG Air among others.
