WARRIORS club in Taikone had double celebrations on Saturday after their women’s and men’s team walked away winners in the Taikone Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA) pre-season grand final.
In the women’s final, Warriors, had too much power and experience over their opponents, Badmix, beating them 3-0.
The women’s game could have gone either way had Badmix got their acts together to defuse the spikes from their opponents.
In the men’s final, Warriors led by skipper Junior Memehere had to struggle in the early stages against their opponents led by former players Joe Koita and Uva Mea, ending up with a good 3-1 win over Warriors.
TAVA interim chairman Jeffrey Mala congratulated the teams who take part in the finals at the weekend.
Mala said he did not expect a successful final but thanked the coaching staff of the teams for their efforts.
Mala also acknowledged the support of sponsors Caveman Constructions Limited, Lopia Laima and others for their contributions in cash to stage the event.
Caveman Construction Ltd managing director Tau Matapere said his company supported the initiative because TAVA had the potential to be a force in volleyball in PNG.
“TAVA was once the three-time national champions before NCD and VAVA took over and they have the potential to repeat this former glory,” he said.
Matapere has made commitment to support TAVA this season and would continue to ensure there was change in the lives of youths in the community in Taikone.
He said the company was making a commitment and urged players and the management to instill discipline and the youth to change their attitudes to ensure Taikone was a better place to live.
