Waste management company hopes to keep environment safe

A WASTE management company hopes to participate in the green economy and keep the environment safe.
Engan couple Stanley Mark and Rebecca Kyakas had founded the company, Wabag Waste Management, to ensure waste-considered rubbish were treated and released in an environmentally friendly manner.
They recently received a US$5,000 (about K17,589) from the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) to start their business.
“Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas and Dr Lino Tom (Wabag MP) are building Enga, the town is improving but there is still no plan for wastage,” Mark said.
“People’s attitude towards controlling rubbish is a big issue that is where we come in.
“For us, Wabag Waste Management, is a new initiative in Enga. The idea has been here but there have been no resources and no direction on where to start and how to go about it because everything is just politics, you know someone, you get into business.
“In Enga, we do not know what is waste management, people throw anything everywhere, they do not know what is sustainable waste management or climate change, carbon emission and pollution, infrastructure development is happening but people’s attitudes are still the same, they are saying the environment is green, what are you talking about.
“There is still fresh air, rivers are still flowing, what is carbon emissions? Nobody knows. People on the coast could be seeing changes and feeling the effect of climate change but not in Wabag.”
Mark received entrepreneurial training from GGGI in partnership with the EmStret Holdings Limited.
“The trainings have been helpful,” he said.
