PEOPLE should watch what they eat to keep healthy and energised, says former journalist Ramcy Wama after he was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue.
Wama, from the Dei electorate in Western Highlands, is married with six children.
He needs urgent assistance to travel overseas for treatment before the cancer reached its third stage.
Wama was a journalist with Post Courier newspaper from 2011 till last year when he fell ill.
It started as a sore on his tongue that was not healing up.
Wama said that happens to many betel nut chewers and he continued chewing and hoping it would heal itself.
A doctor friend saw him and advised that it was cancer he needed to have it treated.
Wama flew to Port Moresby from Mt Hagen and went to different hospitals before he was diagnosed with cancer.
“I couldn’t believe that happened to me and I’m appealing to the public to be mindful of their health,” Wama said.
“I regret my bad food choices and other bad habits such as smoking and chewing betel nuts.”
Wama said betel nut chewers should be careful of the lime content in their mix.
Wama needs assistance to travel to the Medical City Hospital (MCH) in the Philippines.
“I need to attend radiotherapy in the Philippines so that can help me recover,” he said.
Wama was diagnosed with tongue cancer in February and was a patient at the ENT clinic at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
According to his medical reports, Dr Solomon Kombukun from the hospital confirmed that Wama would need radiotherapy overseas for his condition.
Senior medical officer at the Rainbow Medical Centre Ltd Dr Newman Albert also confirmed that Wama needed overseas treatment.
