THE Ombudsman Commission will not be directed or dictated to by any person or authority and will exercise its powers independently, Chief Ombudsman Chornox Manek has said.
He was responding to criticisms from political leaders for its silence over national issues such as the controversial judicial conduct law.
He said the critics lacked understanding of the facts and processes involved by the commission in carrying out its constitutional functions and duties.
He said the commission was conducting its own research and analysis of evidence on constitutional and political issues including the new law.
“The commission is also keeping a watching brief on each given situation,” Manek said.
and balancing those against public policy and all other relevant factors that need to be taken into account,” Manek said.
“Whatever the case, it must be done for the interest of the Constitution and the people of PNG.
“This is a testing time for leaders and I urge all to ensure they uphold the Constitution as per the oath of office and declaration.
“As leaders, we must respect and act in the spirit of our Constitution and not lose sight of the principles of good governance and leadership.
“Leaders have a lot of power and influence but we must always bear in mind that our individual judgment and leadership should not be subjected to or be allowed to be subsumed by self-interest and affiliations that affect the nation, its people and interests.”
Manek said the commission was one of eight special authorities listed in the Constitution and has equal rights to make an application to the Supreme Court as in the case of the judicial conduct law.
