Bakapbaku villagers in the Leron-Wantoat local level government, in Markham district, Morobe, last Friday witnessed with delight water supply to the village.
It was their own initiative and they paid part of the cost.
The village now has access to 21 taps, with seven showers and laundry tubs connected to every home, making life easier than walking miles to fetch water for drinking or washing.
The cutting of the traditional ribbon to mark the launch of the project was done by Leron-Wantoat LLG president Andrew Gena and Lutheran Development Services (LDS) infrastructure adviser Steffen Mitz.
Mitz said the project was initiated by the villagers with the assistance of LDS.
It took six weeks to be completed at the cost of K55,000 of which 10 per cent was raised by the Bakapbaku community.
Mitz said credit should go to the villagers as they contributed to building the water supply system while LDS assited them to build and look after the project.
Fuape Hurikwa, who is from the village and is attached to LDS, said in his last 15 years with the company, they had built water supply through taps for villages but for this project, showers and laundry tubs were included.
