Wau hosts Mamose soccer tournament

SOCCER players and fans from Mamose region have flocked to the historical township of Wau, Morobe, for the Mamose soccer championship that started yesterday.
Teams from Sepik and Madang could not make it, but the host organising committee chairman Sinaka Yamu said five women’s and eight men’s teams from Lae, Boana, Bulolo and Wau were attending the event.
The event is sponsored by local companies – Jabanadi, Giant Holdings and Vincent Enterprise and multi-million kina international companies, Morobe Mining JV, Niuminco, Inter-Pacific Gold Buyers and Bestino Alluvial Mining.
The hosts and Lae Football Association fielded two men and women teams each.
The other major city league, Lahi from Lae contributed one team each in the men’s and women’s divisions.
Boana in Nawaeb district, who are a regular competitor at the championships, contributed a men’s team.
Despite the threat of ethnic clash, police are out in force to ensure players and spectators enjoy the real spirit of soccer through true sportsmanship.
