LAE’S biggest offseason soccer tournament, the Wawens Cup, is progressing well, according to tourney match commissioner Alex Toki.
He told The National that the last two days had been successful, but urged team managers to complete their master list of players.
“Bawak, from Madang’s Rai Coast, are competing in the week-long tournament,” Toki said.
“Outside of Lae, but in Morobe, we have Nasing (Finschhafen), Popdubi B Stone (Salamaua) and Menyamya football club also competing in the tournament.
“We kicked off the tournament on Tuesday and hopefully we’ll have the knockouts by Friday and finish with the finals on Sunday.”
Toki said a couple of sponsors had shown interest in the tournament, but Andrew Namuesh and his family were the founders and major sponsors of the tournament.
He said Papua New Guinea Football Association general secretary Pius Letenge had confirmed that the national men’s and women’s coaches would travel to the Morobe capital tomorrow to watch Wawens Cup matches at Lae Football Association Park.
