‘We all must do our part’

Education

IT is the responsibility of both the Government and parents to help ensure Papua New Guinea achieve quality education and academic excellence, Policy and Corporate Service deputy secretary Wesley Lakain says.
“The Government has played its part in funding schools, providing infrastructure, providing technical and vocational education and training and others, but parents, teachers and other citizens must do their part as well,” he said.
“We understand that funding did not get to schools on time and when it does for primary schools, it is okay.
“But for high schools, we face many problems on boarding facilities and overhead costs.
“These problems also affect the student’s education.
“Education is a growing state of the Government body and will not remain the same because of the many policy reviews.”
Lakain said each province had different problems and priorities depending on political situation, geography and others.
“Our challenge is to ensure we are on the same page and are aligned with the needs of provinces to achieve the same goal,” he said.
“Tuition fees are affecting education because parents are not paying and they do not care whether their children are serious with their education.”
