We are still paying the price of independence

I WOULD like to convey my deepest sympathies to the families of victims of the recent ferry tragedy.
John Paska is correct to say the government is as guilty as the operators of that ill-fated ferry.
Having said that, I would like to ask this question: When has there been a time in this country where high standards of service delivery and good governance were never an issue?
The answer to that will be found in the track records of all former prime ministers.
We have been taken for a ride since independence.
Gaining independence had a price tag on it and till today, Papua New Guineans are paying for the price called freedom.
It is a shame that many of our politicians – past and present – have one thing in mind: to look after their own interest instead of the six million Papua New Guineans.
This has led to the crippling underfunding of vital government services to the people such as health, education, transportation on land, sea and air and other basic infrastructure.
Change is imminent and I urge every voter to think hard before casting their votes.
