We need jobs, but how?

Letters

UNEMPLOYMENT is a serious problem in Papua New Guinea.
It is becoming more and more serious day by day. PNG has a population of about eight million mostly unemployed people.
The problem of unemployment is rising fast. Every able-bodied man and woman should be able to have a job if she or he wants it. If unsolved, the problem of unemployment will make developing the country difficult.
Here, I suggest some points that can be considered.
Firstly, we should check the country’s fast-rising population. The faster the population grows and the bigger it becomes the harder it will be to find jobs.
Our people should be encouraged to consider family planning schemes and educated about the importance of having small family. This, again, is aimed at solving the problem of unemployment.
Secondly, the education system should be made needs- based. At present, every man and woman, including the thousands who graduate from universities and colleges, want a job in the office.
Even graduates in agricultural studies want an office job in town.
Schools and colleges are like factories.
The education of our country should be job-oriented and should make our students self-dependent.
Thirdly, a change in mental attitude is necessary, especially among the youths, who are service-minded. They do not want to take risks. They do not want to start business or small-scale industries.
To sum it up, we should solve the problem of unemployment on a war footing.
Population growth must be checked.
Family planning should be made productive.
People should be encouraged to go for skill-based education.
It’s time for a change and we need educated people in the government and private sectors to build a nation based on reliance, equality and transparency.
