MILNE Bay Governor Titus Philemon has warned students from the province to stay away from bad habits and immoral practices and concentrate on their studies.

Philemon said the province’s development was at a stage where it really needed human resources who were well educated and had qualifications in specialised fields.

He said the provincial government this year was providing more support for tertiary students who were expected to reciprocate by concentrating on their studies.

Milne Bay allocated K1 million to support the fees of its tertiary students fees – K840,000 was paid to 28 tertiary institutions for 335 students.

The amount was deposited into the bank accounts of the various institutions last Thursday.

About 20 students from the province who did not get spaces in tertiary schools will be sent to Australia to undertake studies in TAFE colleges.

Philemon thanked the five secondary schools in the province which achieved good results. 211 students managed to secure places in tertiary institutions.

“This is a 100% increase on the 104 who got places in tertiary institutions last year.”

The provincial government has also warned schools to stop charging students project fees from Elementary to Grade 12.

Any school charging project fees will be penalised.
