PRIME Minister James Marape has echoed the thoughts of a grateful nation in lauding the victories by the Kumuls and Orchids last Saturday over their rugby league rivals from Great Britain.
“My heart is lifted again for our country when critics write us off, but we still aspire to do better,” he said.
“The results of our national rugby league teams – Orchids and Kumuls – in their test matches against the visiting Great Britain teams are testament to our abilities and resilience.”
Kumuls won 28-10 and the Orchids 20-16 over the touring British teams at the National Football Stadium.
Marape said the wins “lifted the spirits of the people”.
“Our Kumuls and Orchids teams have lifted our spirits one more time,” he said.
He also acknowledged the recent win by the national men cricket team Barramundis to qualify for the 2020 World Cup. “Our Government wants to encourage free spirit in our citizens and friends of our country many who have lived with us for so long,” he said.
“We want our nation to be joyous, friendly, fair, rich and welcoming to our citizens, friends and guests.
“Not all is bad. Have hope and just like our sportsmen and women who are giving their best for our country, let me encourage all our citizens wherever you are, student or worker, villager or urbanite, coastal or highlander, let’s pull together to make our country better.
“Our Government will give equal opportunities in business and education to all our citizens.
“We want to empower our citizens and country to be self-reliant and economically independent, the anchor policy of Pangu Pati.
“We can overcome great challenges of our nation faces, just like our rugby league and cricket teams have done this year.
“Well done all coaching staff and players, family of sponsors and thank you for giving us hope.”
