WEST Eagles continued perfect start to the Port Moresby Australian Football League season with a 54-34 win over rivals Koboni in round four at the Colts Oval on Saturday.
The top-of-the-table clash saw the Eagles break out in the first quarter with skipper and full forward Jeffery Vogae dominant in attack alongside McKenzie Kaman for three goals and one behind for a 19-0 lead. Koboni, with Papua New Guinea internationals Amua Pirika (forward) and Stanis Susuve (fullback), in their line-up got off to a slow start with just one goal and a behind while the Eagles continued their attack with two more goals and one behind for a 32-8 lead at halftime.
The Eagles’ forwards combination of Vogae, Kaman and Mathew Pulah Jr would add three more goals as Koboni’s defence buckled under pressure.
The final quarter from Koboni would see a fiery comeback with brothers Douglas and Andrew Lai leading their attack from the centre for an impressive three goals.
But time would not permit their attempts to level up as West took out the match with eight goals and six behinds (54) to Koboni’s five goals and four behinds (34).
“The boys displayed some brilliant football against Koboni, it was like watching a grand final and everyone really worked hard as a team,” Eagles head coach Danny Meli said.
“Vogae was everywhere with good accuracy in his kicking to drive the ball forward for us with McKenzie and Jackson Nawi, who I thought really stood up and had a great game.”
