THE West Sepik government has for the first time taken the initiative to subsidise tuition fees for local students attending tertiary institutions in the country.

Acting Governor Paul Nengai has carried on from what former Governor Amkat Mai did last year.

Nengai said: “As a leader I have an interest in my students that is why I have come to present their subsidies.

“In the past, West Sepik has failed to help its students. Human resource is one of the main factors in the development.”

Nengai said this year the provincial government has passed a policy for School Fee Subsidy to assist tertiary students around the country.

He said Parliamentary leaders from the four districts in the province were in support of the policy and would help subsidise school fees next year. Some of the universities that have received school fee subsidy cheques have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the provincial government.

Nengai urged West Sepik students from various universities and institutions to submit their full lists before the end of this

year so that the provincial government could help subsidise their fees for next year.
