THE West Sepik government is working on a tourism plan to tap into the huge Indonesian market, administrator Conrad Tilau says.
“We already have the plan to attract Indonesian and other international tourists, including visitors from other parts of Papua New Guinea, to visit our waterfalls, beaches and other exotic places in the province,” Tilau said.
“We have waterfalls at Wutung and Awawi villages and surfing at Lido; they are part of the packages in the plan.”
Tilau said they engaged a consultant last week to draft a Sandaun tourism destination plan.
“The consultant is progressing well and hopefully during the final provincial assembly meeting of this year that plan can be passed so that we have a policy and legislation to start regulating tourism by next year. Otherwise, tourism activities are already happening.”
Awawi Eco-tourism director Bonny Ani said they started tourism activities last year and built rest houses for tourists to enjoy the waterfalls.
