Western needs visionary leaders

Letters

MOST of us seem to confuse ourselves as to why Daru Island is not progressing and why corruption there is so rampant.
In the midst of our own confusion, we have been blaming every government for the lack of developments.
Many are saying that we are to be blamed for electing wrong leaders or accepting bribery and wantok system as the root cause of corruption and the lack of progress.
From my understanding, the Government is not responsible for corruption and the lack of development.
The Government is of the people, by the people and for the people.
It’s only that we have corrupt leaders in the Government.
The truth is Daru has a leadership problem.
The 40 plus year’s leadership has proven incapable of running the province and Daru town itself.
People of Western should know that we are at a time were the leadership is a threat and grave concern for the future of the people of South Fly District.
We should know that time does not change things naturally.
It is man who change things with time as they desired in their visions and development plans.
Daru Island has never progress and advance forward from economic growth but has been robbed by incompetent and greedy politicians who have no idea of running the affairs of the district but to enrich themselves.
Daru Island has more problem than you can imagine.
Why is housing still a problem?
Why do we have the highest unemployment rate in the province?
Why do we have chronic law and order problems?
Why is the cost of living too high?
Water and sanitation, poverty are some of the things people had to endure.
The leaders simply do not have any vision to address this problems.
The main factor that stagnant development in Daru is corruption.
Corruption is defined as the abuse of entrusted power for personal gain and it is a global phenomenon.
Corruption is widespread in all levels of society, the social and economic effects of it are visible and affect everyone.
In fact, we are a people or a government simply operating on ad hock basis driven by our deep desire of personnel wealth creation and name making.
We care less about the country and people’s future.
People’s perception about development in Daru Island has not changed.
Changes do not happen overnight.
But changes do happen overnight when the right people lay the foundations and framework for change and strive towards them.
In Daru, we are yet to lay the foundations for change.
Let alone the mechanisms to uproot and weed out the corruption endemic.
Look at the current problems we are facing. Corruption, our no care attitude problem, law and order issues, high unemployment rate and high cost of living etc.
Will these problems go away easily and open the golden doors for PNG and the people of Western to a better, healthier and happy society in 2050?
I am not sure where the South Fly District with its town is heading.
Political and commercial corruption is largely enforced by political nepotism and the patronage system of governance.
Elected leaders are inclined to seize and distribute resources amongst their electorates in order to secure and maintain popular support.
Because of prevalent corruption, despite a budget surplus, the national wealth has failed to flow down to the people.
Goals and great success can only be achieved if the Government fight and stick together and if the Government eradicated corruption and create a strong leadership.
We need zero-tolerance approach towards corruption, a clean system, which is necessary for Daru Town’s success.
As a Kiwai Islander and the citizen of this country, we the people of South Fly demand and expect a clean system.
Only a few people in Daru Island believe that they can make it because they work hard, not because they have special connections or are paying extra ‘fees’, and that is the way things should be.
If the Government is serious about taking back PNG, then consider South Fly people’s situation and set up a team to investigate the Western provincial administration quickly.

  • Correctly identified and articulated. Call on the local MP to step out and outline his plan to execute this way back history. Otherwise, he is not a leader enough but a follower
