THE WEWAK urban council took part in the Batas trade fair as part of its sister-city agreement with Jayapura, the capital of Papua, in Indonesia, says Mayor Charles Malenki.
“Our participation in this trade fair and the re-opening of the Batas Trade Centre was part of our sister-city agreement. The agreement aims to strengthen economic development and trade, tourism, sports, culture, education and transportation,” he said.
Last week, more than 40 people from Sepik were in Jayapura on a cultural and sports exchange programme.
Malenki said they had already sent 16 youths to attend technical courses in Indonesia.
He said one of the things that had been discussed was the possibility of opening a sea route between Jayapura and Wewak.
