Wewak gears up for boxing meet

WEWAK town will be bustling with activity as preparations heighten to launch its Pro-Boxing Tournament next weekend.
The Sepik Sport Gymnasium (SSG) in Wewak town will host the East Sepik Professional Boxing tournament when they officially unveil a new boxing ring.
The ring was donated by PNG Professional Boxing head Bernard Fong last month, and heralds the introduction of professional boxing in East Sepik Province (ESP).
The event slated for March 1-2 will be used as a publicity event to gauge local and international competitors.
The tournament will see PNG boxers, Elvin Wafewa, Charles Taranu and Donald Kutzen take on invitational boxers from Indonesia  Geisler Ap, Marius Mabel and Manuel Maker.
Organised by Wafewa and assisted by Jerry Jinembari, David Kalim and Betty Muri, the team aims to change the attitudes of the youths and bring change to his province.
“I want to give something to my province by way of changing the attitudes of the youths. There is an attitude problem in the community and I want to change that by turning them to boxing and instilling discipline” Wafewa said.
The invitational boxers and their officials will arrive from Jayapura next Thursday, followed by the arrival of PNG Guests and VIP’s including, Sport Minister Justin Tkatchenko on Friday, February 28.
