The Meri Futbol initiative of Fifa through the PNGFA is now into its second round in Wewak with the finals to be hosted in September.
The concept has attracted girls from five primary schools to compete in the U-14 and U-16 divisions.
Wewak Football Association president Mathew Chapok said the development programme was going well and talented players could be identified for future development.
The programme has been supported by the schools and is run by four volunteers including coordinator Kathryn Kusunan, a former PNG female representative player.
“The programme is important to ensure that our girls are competitive by developing them from a young age and you can see them improving on a weekly basis,” said Kusunan.
Chapok encouraged parents to go out and support the young girls during their games at Moem Barracks.
He hopes to extend the programme to other communities in the province as well to identify talented players who can selected for future development.
