Fifteen teams will compete in a soccer exchange programme between Wewak and Jayapura which kicks off today.
Wewak Mayor Charles Malenki said there were 12 male and three female teams in the three-day tournament.
Some teams travelled into Wewak from Aitape and Vanimo (west sepik), including the Tunas Muda Hamadi club from Jayapura.
Malenki explained that the competition followed a memorandum of understanding Wewak signed with Jayapura three years ago.
“Last year, 50 youths from Wewak went over to Jayapura to compete with Tunas Muda Hamadi.
“We (wewak) are hosting them this time,” he said.
“It’s a friendly tournament, there is no prize. We are extending the MOU for the next three years.
“I have seen a lot of good things come out from the MOU.”
Malenki also thanked sponsors, including the local business community, for their support towards hosting the friendlies.
