Wewak youth pledge support
The National, Monday February 24th, 2014
HUNDREDS of unemployed youths in Wewak, East Sepik, have pledged to work with Governor Sir Michael Somare to give the town a major facelift.
Wewak Urban Youth Corps, made up of more than 1,500 youths, said its priority is keeping themselves busy to stay out of trouble.
Chairman Frank Kul led a delegation to Sir Michael’s office in Wewak where they discussed how best their services could be utilised by the provincial government to address law and order, help in general maintenance, construction and beautification programmes.
Kul said they were mobilising youths from the 16 wards of Wewak Urban LLG and were grateful that Sir Michael had come to their aid with K5,000 last Tuesday.
“We will use the money to open bank accounts for all 16 wards so that any proceeds from activities we do are properly managed,” he said.
“Unemployed youths have been causing many problems in town but WUYC will keep them occupied and at least earn a little bit of money, which they will turn into an honest living.”
