Where will evicted settlers go?

Letters

IN last year alone, the Government has seen the eviction of many settlers in the country.
Many among the displaced are workers engaged in the public and private sectors.
The majority are those who have low-paying jobs.
Caught in the middle are students who are now an added burden to their families as a result of losing their homes and having to relocate, and adjusting to new environments.
Relocation could mean added costs for those affected and loss of jobs and decline in productivity for employers.
Many of the displaced will need to be taken in by friends and relatives in urban areas and this means added costs and disruptions to family routines, which in turn places more stress in the home.
Social disorder, which the authorities are trying to curb and bring under control through these evictions, will increase, giving a hard time for the law enforcers.
We are already witnessing ethnic tensions and clashes flaring up all over Port Moresby.
The police force is very quick to attend to evictions and enjoy the drama that follows with families weeping and wailing as homes are smashed to pieces.
We hope the police hierarchy does plan smart because we are in an election year with the force’s manpower stretched to its limits and many displaced and traumatised people are now occupying the overcrowded streets of the city with really nowhere to go.
National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop’s plan of resettling the displaced has now been put into question.
We hope those pushing for blanket evictions realise the stress being exerted on the police and the humanitarian disaster being created by State and other agencies in pursuing their agendas.
The mass evictions being pushed through and being granted legality by the courts and authorities constitutes an error in human judgement to progress development.
The displaced will simply not disappear into thin air, they will be around and add to the congestion the city is now facing.
What about the buildings and homes that are taken down by the displaced?
Where will the evicted take their belongings and go to?
