THOUSANDS of Catholics in Western Highlands gathered together in Banz last Friday to welcome Catholic nun, Sr Rose Bernard.
The occasion was also to celebrate with Sr Rose who received a Logohu award from the Government for serving the cause of health and HIV/AIDS in the province.
She received the medal for her outstanding performance in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the country.
Community leaders, including former provincial administrator Michael Wandil, and other public servants and choirs turned up to welcome her.
Sr Rose was among the other 107 people who received the Logohu award at the Government House last Thursday.
Mt Hagen Catholic church Archbishop, Douglas Young commended Sr Rose for creating history by securing the award from the Government.
Bishop Young said Sr Rose was one of those who worked tirelessly in her life through education in the fight
against the deadly disease.
“It is also good news for the Catholic church and Christians that at last their work is recognised by the Government.
“Sr Rose is also a teacher and health worker and served the North Waghi district for almost her life time.
“Even though you can perform any kind of work for the people in secret but God will expose you,” Bishop Young said.
He said Sr Rose was a person who worked in secret but God had exposed her and she was recognised.
Bishop Young thanked the Government for recognising the work of the Catholic church in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the country.
Mr Wandil described Sr Rose as a mother to the people of North Waghi.
“ Sr Rose came to Banz when she was young and set up the Maria Queen Centre, a prime Catholic church centre, which took care of people living with HIV/AIDS.
“She taught many people to live a very successful life and played a key role in the development of the province,” he said.
