A CLAN in Western Highlands has funded the construction of a new 10km road to link their area to the rest of the province.
The Enga Waraki clan in the Dei district had paid for the road with their own money because they needed basic government services such as health and education to be delivered to them.
The road project was initiated by community magistrate Mino Kek, Chief Puri Malt and Steward Lupian.
“This road will also help the Minimbi and the Kombulga tribes as well,” team leader Lupian said.
He said they undertook the project because they could not wait for the government to build a road for them.
“If people want to be spoon-fed, then they will keep on waiting,” he said.
“We cannot wait to see our children die from sickness or walk for long distances to school and that is why this road will help us.
“We have been neglected but now this road will benefit thousands of people.”
Lupian said the road started at the Kamun mountain and ended at Muga village where people were used to carrying heavy loads and walking long distances.
He added that his people had taken the initiative to build road and urged the government help maintain it.
Lupian said local MP Wesley Nukundi and Governor Paias Wingti should help them to put gravel so that the road could become permanent.
