WHP police vow to stop bad practices
POLICE in Western Highlands province are confident of stopping the hijacking of ballot boxes, papers and other illegal activities during the general election.
Provincial police commander Chief Supt Kaiglo Ambane said police were well prepared and would ensure a free and fair election.
He said more than 2,000 officers from the police, correctional services and military would be deployed in the province.
Ambane said police had learnt a lot from the 2007 general election and would ensure that illegal practices such as hijacking of ballot papers, boxes, intimidation, double voting and other illegal practices would not happen again.
He said the disciplined forces would provide tight security during polling until the results were declared.
Ambane said police had identified high risk areas where criminal activities normally took place and would be particularly vigilant there.
“I don’t want to see any more cowboys. If you want to be a cowboy, you will risk your life,” he said.
He urged people to report to police anyone keeping illegal firearms.
He said police were ready to deal with people planning to cause disturbances.
