Why are police officers swearing civilians?

Letters

IT was with disgust that I viewed the captioned picture of police officers with a suspect on Friday’s front page story of The National.
No, the disgust was not the picture but the caption that stated that “the officers in the picture swore at journalists”.
I tried to reason why members of the Police swore at journalists when the media personnel were doing their job – reporting on a good job done by police in rounding up suspects in car thefts in Port Moresby.
I still cannot understand why police officers swore at citizens of this country.
Were those officers taught to swear when they did their training at Bomana Police College? Did their station or unit commanders give them the right to swear at civilians?
This is just unbelievable.
How could police officers in the capital city – the gateway for most international visitors to PNG – be committing such a heinous act, something that we have never seen in other capital cities in the region, including the Pacific Islands?
What does that mean?
Is the police force in Port Moresby made up of armed police officers that go around swearing at civilians, people who are taxpayers, the ones who they (police) should protect against criminals?
No such reports have come out from Lae or Madang or Rabaul in recent times. Reports of police officers cursing civilians while in full police uniform and armed.
I am appealing to the Acting NCD/Central Assistant Commissioner Anthony Wagambie and NCD Metropolitan Commander Perou N’dranou to investigate and penalise such officers who swear at civilians.
Such officers have no place in the force.
They cannot keep giving a bad name to the police force for such unbelievable and unethical acts.
I am sure Wagambie, a no-nonsense commander, will in time get the force in NCD and Central to lift their game, including penalising those who are unethical.
It is time for a change in the capital city. We hope such behaviours by police officers will be addressed and officers concerned be penalised to save the good name of the force.
Such officers are unfit to be in the uniform. They have to be forced to leave!

  • The action of swearing at citizens in front of innocent people, children and others is just as bad as their attitudes. They need more time to train to improve on their attitudes to their job. Weapons and vehicles bought by tax payers money is used to abuse, attack and destroy citizens and their properly.
