More than 40 great grandmothers and mothers in two Central villages were presented with certificates and passbooks to help them achieve financial security.
They were all widows, two among them were 90 years old who were left heartbroken and marginalised, secluded and rejected for long and left to fend themselves.
The widows from Kapari and Viriolo villages in Aroma Coast of Abau district received their certificates and passbooks from the Papua New Guinea Widows Association Inc on Feb 12.
The event was witnessed by Bank of PNG Micro Finance expansion project manager Jacob Gob, who was given the honour of handing out the passbooks.
Abau MP Sir Puka Temu’s wife Lady Bernadette, pledged K10,000 to the widows on behalf of Sir Puka.
The widows also received a similar pledge of K10,000 from Central Governor Kila Haoda and a K4000 commitment from the provincial community development office.
Abau Women’s Association president Jean Kapigeno said they would commit some funds to the widows’ account later.
