Williams seeking unity for good of rugby union

The current power struggle in PNG rugby is demonstrated by the running of two rugby competitions in the National Capital district. There is the NCDRU and the Capital Rugby Union based at Bava Park.
Former national rugby representative and ex-Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union (PNGRFU) president Soiat Williams said the situation in Port Moresby with two rival competitions had demonstrated the rift over the presidency.
The disconnection with other provincial unions in the country has contributed to the non-inclusive approach to players’ selection into the PNG Pukpuks and the coming Oceania Rugby Sevens Youth Olympics qualifier in Argentina in April.
“Our performance at the HSBC Sevens Series can be improved tenfold,” Williams said.
“However, such goals can only be realised if PNGRFU is united at all levels of the games and issues of player selection and related rugby development matters can be addressed in a much more focused and coherent manner.”
Williams appealed to PNGRFU president Ben Frame and other stakeholders to unite for the sport’s good.
The convening of the annual general meeting is desperately needed and is the only means and solution to get rugby moving forward, Williams said.
In the meantime, Williams has called on Oceania Rugby to work closely with the parties in the dispute to resolve their differences.
