ATHLETICS PNG officials fear that Toea Wisil may miss this weekend’s Australian national championships due to an administrative oversight regarding her visa.
Wisil returned to PNG after the recent Australian Tour Meets and Queensland championships.
When Athletics PNG officials checked her visa status before finalising travel arrangements they were advised that her current visa would be valid for her travel this week.
In fact it has now been discovered that this is not the case and Wisil needs a new visa to return to Australia.
“With a normal visa application processing time of five days it doesn’t look good,” Athletics PNG president Tony Green said last night.
“All we can do is consult the Australian High Commission tomorrow and seek advice on whether there might be a particular category of visa that can be granted quickly.”
Wisil is in top form and on the verge of qualifying for the Olympic Games.
Not only that, but with Sally Pearson considered an unlikely starter, Wisil is in with a real chance of winning an Australian title which would be a major achievement in itself.
“It would be a huge disappointment to Toea, her coach and all her supporters if she were not able to make it to Melbourne to run on Friday,” Green said.
