Wisil family affair
The National, Tuesday July 14th, 2015
It was a family affair on the athletics tracks last night as the Wisils – Toea and Kupun – qualified for the 100m semi-finals tonight.
In the women’s 100m heats local queen Toea clocked 12.08s in front of main rival, Fijian YounisBese on 12.10s.
Papua New Guinea’s Mirriam Peni and Adrine Monagi were impressive with times of 12.49s and 12.55s respectively.
The highlight of the night was in the men’s heat one which featured South Pacific’s sprint king Ratu Banuve Tabakaucoro of Fiji who burnt the tracks in 10.5s.
PNG’s Kupun and Wesley Logorava clocked 10.86s and 11.03s respectively.
The top 16 in the men’s sprint head into the semi-finals tonight, with the women’s top eight set for the final at 7.30pm.
The notable miss-out in the 100m is local sprint sensation Nelson Stone, who will focus on the 200m. Kupun, though finishing .3s behind Tabakaucoro, was confident of standing up to the Fijian flyer tonight.
“He is fast but I am ready for him,” Kupun said.
