Wisil set to equal 2010 effort

PAPUA New Guinea’s leading female athlete Toea Wisil, pictured, advanced to the semi-finals of the 100m track event in the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
On Sunday, the PNG champion came third in her heat with a time of 11.64 seconds and has qualified to run in the second round in the Hampden Park Stadium.
Wisil was to have run in the first semi-final, which was at 4am today.
Adrine Monagi and Helen Philemon, who ran the 100m in other heats, did not qualify.
Monagi stopped the clock at 12.83 and Philemon 13.12.
In the women’s 400m, Betty Burua, Shirley Vunatup and Donna Koniel did their best but did not get into the top three places in their heats and bowed out of the second round.
Burua clocked a season’s best time of 55.48s, while Vunatup came home in 1.00.10 and Koniel 58.40.
The male sprinters of Kupun Wisil and Ruwan Gunasinghe who participated in the men’s 100m did not qualify for the second round, clocking 10.86 and 11.03 respectively.
