Alotau has much to teach the rest of the country.
First of all, as the capital of Milne Bay, it has a famous claim to history for it was around there that the invading Japanese army suffered it first land defeat in the Pacific War in 1942, before the Kokoda Track battle.
Today, Alotau is at war for a different reason: To stay clean as the rest of the country struggles with rubbish, especiually from betel nut.
Take for example its bus stop, which are some of the longest in the country. But while bus styops in other major centres can be filthy with betel nut spit and rubbish, Alotau is spotless. And that is how the locals want to keep it.
